What is Freemasonry
Freemasonry is a centuries-old fraternity dedicated to making good men better through moral development, community service, and brotherly support. Guided by the principles of Faith, Hope, and Charity, Masons strive to improve themselves and the world around them.
Charity
At the heart of Masonry is charity. Masons are taught gratitude and generosity—offering relief to those in need. Arundel Lodge supports local programs that benefit schools, hospitals, veterans, families, and children.
Self-Improvement
Freemasonry encourages men to live balanced lives, valuing hard work, faith, education, and self-discipline. Its lessons help members grow as individuals and as contributing members of society.
Community
For over 200 years, Freemasons have been part of the Kennebunk, Arundel, and Kennebunkport communities. Built in 1930, the Arundel Lodge serves as a hub for local events, public suppers, and charitable gatherings, with facilities available for community use.
Responsibility
Masons uphold a deep sense of responsibility toward one another, extending support to Brothers, their families, widows, and orphans—ensuring that no one stands alone in times of need.
History
Rooted in ancient traditions, Freemasonry has long championed liberty, equality, and fraternity. From the time of the Founding Fathers to today, Masons have remained committed to personal integrity, civic duty, and service to humanity.
Friendship
Freemasonry fosters genuine friendship built on respect and equality. In Lodge, men meet “on the level” and “on the square,” setting aside political and religious divisions to focus on shared values and goodwill.
To Be One, Ask One
Freemasonry is not a secret society — it’s a society with secrets, built on friendship, moral growth, and service to others.
Joining begins with a simple step: you must ask.
The phrase “To be one, ask one” reflects one of Masonry’s oldest traditions. Men are not invited to join; they come forward of their own free will, seeking truth, self-improvement, and brotherhood.
Those who wish to become Masons should:
Be men of good character and integrity
Believe in a Supreme Being, regardless of denomination
Be at least 18 years of age
Have a genuine desire to learn, grow, and serve their community
