Arundel Lodge Invests $40,000 in Local Literacy Through Partnership with the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Portland

In May 2024, Arundel Lodge No. 76 AF & AM announced its largest community investment in Lodge history — a $40,000 contribution to the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Portland.

Through this partnership, seven teachers from RSU 21 and one teacher from The School Around Us are receiving full accreditation in Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Structured Language Education, a proven, research-based method for helping children with dyslexia learn to read and thrive.

For over 25 years, the Scottish Rite’s Children’s Dyslexia Centers have helped children regain confidence and self-esteem through structured reading instruction and individualized tutoring. Arundel Lodge’s contribution extends that mission locally, empowering educators and supporting students who need it most.

Many of us are fathers, uncles, and grandparents of children in these schools,” said Worshipful Master David Crowell.
We wanted to ensure every child in our community has access to programs that help them read — and to support the teachers who make that possible.

Training began in May, with educators dedicating more than 50 hours of classroom study this summer and over 100 hours of practicum work throughout the upcoming school year. Recently, Lodge members visited the teachers to share dinner and encouragement — celebrating their progress and commitment.

This effort builds on Arundel Lodge’s long tradition of supporting education through programs such as Most Improved Student Night, College Scholarships, and Bikes for Books.

Arundel Lodge extends heartfelt thanks to Barbara Labreque, who is leading the training, and to all participating educators for their dedication to local students and families.

Together, we’re building stronger readers, stronger schools, and a stronger community.
